Topic: 2012 Yearly Firsts

All set up to take your first finds of the year.  If the forecast for warm weather holds, I expect things will get checked off quickly.  For that matter, if anyone wants that "last snake of the year", Saturday should offer a good opportunity.  Good luck all!

First frog: 1/2/12, bullfrog tadpoles, found with Matt Connior@ 230pm. Matt collected a smallmouth salamander @130pm, both from Calhoun county. The tadpoles had back legs, does that count?  big_smile

Re: 2012 Yearly Firsts

Hey,
I forgot about this, but I found a couple of Zigzag salamanders (P. angusticlavius) in Van Buren County on Gulf Mountain WMA last Tuesday (1/3/11). Also seined up a couple of Eurycea, but I think someone already has first sallie.

I hope to have the venomous knocked out by the end of the weekend.

Re: 2012 Yearly Firsts

I know this is already taken, but I saw the first black rat snake of the year yesterday. He was probably four feet long.

Re: 2012 Yearly Firsts

Was surprised by snake at the pond this afternoon; think it is a cottonmouth (see picture).  It was on the shady side of the pond, with the temperature about 50 degrees.  I spent most of the day walking two ridges in hopes of timber rattlers; no luck.  Jo-Ann

Yep, Cottonmouth.  I think it's early for Timbers by about a month.

Re: 2012 Yearly Firsts

Unless someone wants to report something found earlier or a new county record, then this completes our yearly firsts for 2012.  Good job, all, and thanks for playing!   cool
