Topic: First frog calls

I know this may be a bit early, but if anyone hears any frog calls in the next few weeks, please post the date, time and species (if you know what it is), on this thread. In my winter boredom, I have decided to try and track the call dates for frogs. In addition, if you can get the temperature too, that would be helpful. I thought this might be an interesting project to start the new year. Thanks for your help, and have a happy new year!

Re: First frog calls

Thanks, Kory. They are finally calling en force here too. This warm weather has got a lot of herps active. As warm as its been, I would not be surprised to see a snake.

Peepers started here Monday in a farm pond nearby, and last evening were calling in our forest pond.  Jo-Ann

Re: First frog calls

Peepers have been going crazy lately, even chorusing with gusto during daylight hours.

I got out for a couple of hours Monday night, Feb. 20, as a line of rain was moving through.  Peepers, Boreal Chorus Frogs (Pseudacris maculata), and S. Leopards were out in force and calling like crazy.  Bullfrogs were seen, but not calling.  A single Wood Frog was found on the highway, but I never made it over to their breeding pond to see the activity.  Several Spotted Salamanders were on the march.
