Topic: First herp trip of the year
Matt Connior (AKA gopherman) and I headed out to do some winter herping today. Despite cool temps, we found stuff. At our first stop, Matt found a smallmouth salamander after about a minute of log flipping. On the way to the next stop, I spotted some red-eared sliders in a slough. At site 2, which was a trio of old gravel pit ponds, we seined up several egg masses, presumably from some very early breeding spotted sallies. We both dip netted up several bullfrog tadpoles. We hit two more sites, but only found a couple of marbled sallie larvae. We also seined a nicely vegetated ditch, only to come up with fish and tadpoles. Not too bad for barely 50 degree weather!
So here is the final count:
1 smallmouth salamander
TMTC bullfrog tadpoles
2 marbled salamander larvae
TMTC leopard frog larvae
5 red eared sliders
Non-herps:
TMTC minnows
2 pickerel
1 pirate perch
1 flyer sunfish
3 bluegill
1 hornet
TMTC centipedes
Tobin
