Topic: More personal first herps

I found mine Wednesday; I thought surely I could find red-backs (Plethodon serratus) at my 'personal' seep area near the house on the first of January; they were present on the 30 and 31st of December. Turned out it was cold and windy the first three days of the year. Wednesday was great, 50s and no wind. Thursday I was in the field several hours in higher elevations with no herp sightings, but had little time for stream exploration.  Jo-Ann

I did a little log flipping on Monday, but did not find anything. In my experience, it's hard to find any amphibians if the temp is below 50.

I am going out for awhile this afternoon; it's warm and cloudy.  I will be doing streams today, so perhaps will uncover some duskys.  Don't know what happened to my pictures of the red-backs.  There were two together under the cover, a red morph and a lead morph.  On the 30th, I uncovered those two (same individuals?) and three red morphs together under another board.  Jo-Ann

Do you ever see any rich mountain salamanders?

Re: More personal first herps

There have been no reports of Rich Mt. salamanders here at OMBS.  There are Caddos, but I have not seen any.  Our common sallies are red-backs and Ouachita duskys.  I also find many-ribs frequently, but they seem less abundant.  We have one small pool where spotteds breed in January or February.

I ended up finding more red-backs in the forest yesterday and small duskys in one stream.  I looked this morning as it was very warm (mid 50s) but no snakes.  Jo-Ann

I have been to that area before. It's very pretty, and lots of prime salamander habitat. You are lucky to live in such a nice part of the state.
