Topic: First of season black rat snake

There was a black rat snake basking in the sun by a stream yesterday.  It was very opaque and oblivious to my photography session.

Also had about 20 spotted salamander egg masses in the slate mine pool.  Seems too warm for them, but January - February is typical breeding for them here.

Glad to hear about the salamanders. It sounds like they are reproducing well in west Arkansas. They have been moving lately in south Arkansas as well. As warm as it has been this winter, I'm surprised I have not seen any snakes down this way.

Here at the station our weather is usually a bit different from surrounding areas, perhaps because of our elevation.

The duskies are also on the move.  There was an adult by my house about 6AM yesterday morning.  The house is about 1300 feet in elevation, with streams on east and west side, about 100m downhill from the house.  I wonder about migration between the streams?  Jo-Ann

Very good question. I would guess that there isn't much, unless they are close together or they might migrate to the confluence and then up into another stream. That is something that I am interested in investigating further. I will try to look up and get back to you on.
