Topic: Marion Co.(supposed fishing trip) 4/16

Headed out with RichB this AM in pursuit of White Bass, but after less than an hour that turned into a waste of time,so we decided to hit some tin and shingles that I knew were in the area, but even that turned up nothing.

So we decided to head down towards Crooked Creek and see if the smallmouth were hungry, plus there is some nice AC down that way. About 100 feet from the truck I caught a samll Garter,so we were skunked for the day. Up around an old cellar and foundation of an old farmhouse Rich was able to grab a nice 3.5 foot Coachwhip, and had his hand on a VERY large Black Rat Snake that had his head poked out of the foundation. I took over with the Obseleta so he could handle the Coachwhip since they were about 2 feet apart and noticed that this was a snake that I had released 2 years prior, and was over 7 feet then!!! Nice to see the old guy, even though he always wanted to kill me!!!

Down at the creek I spotted a small Black Racer for about 2 seconds before it zipped into the brush. On the way out we stopped by the old house place agian to see if the Ratsnake was out sunning itself agin, and a gorgeous Speckled Kingsnake slithered right between us!!! Rich decided he wanted to look in the old cellar, and flipped up a Marbled sallie, plus we saw a few skinks and fence Lizards, and a ringneck......so the fishing sucked, but the herps were very active. All this was before 1200 hours!!!

I tell ya what I'll take a day of herping like today over a fish dinner anytime. Even though we had hot dogs tonight I did learn a valueable lesson. Coachwhip musk has an odor that can only be appreciated by a herper. The wife made me head straight for the shower when I came in the door.  wink

Was a good day...........we'll have to repeat it again soon!!

Sounds like you guys had fun.  Rich, I'm not sure I really apreciate the musk of any snake... but perhaps I'm not quite as dedicated as most of you...  I love hearing the good stories, glad you all caught something even if it wasn't a fish.
